DARPA chystá recykláciu starých satelitov na obežnej dráhe

Americká agentúra pre výskum pokročilých obranných projektov (DARPA) spúšťa projekt Phoenix, ktorý umožní znovupoužitie vyradených družíc.

Keď sa starý satelit vyradí z funkčnej prevádzky, je navedený na vyššiu obežnú dráhu, nazývanú aj graveyard orbit (cintorín na obežnej dráhe), aby sa predišlo kolíziám s funkčnými satelitmi. Celková hodnota takto "odhodenej" techniky sa odhaduje asi na 300 miliárd dolárov, pričom mnoho satelitov bolo vyradených iba kvôli koncu životnosti, alebo menším poruchám systémov. Na nich je ale ešte veľa hodnotných súčastí, ktoré by sa dali znova použiť. Práve za účelom recyklácie častí techniky vo vesmíre spúšťa americká agentúra DARPA projekt s názvom Phoenix.

U neho sa počíta s vývojom technológií, ktoré by umožnili opätovné využitie napríklad antén, či iných prvkov satelitov. Týmto spôsobom by sa dali výrazne znížiť náklady na vypúšťanie nových satelitov na obežnú dráhu, keď namiesto kompletnej družice by sa raketou vyniesol iba malý nanosatelit, nazvaný agentúrou ako satlet. Ten by sa potom napríklad len pripojil k vyradenému satelitu a použil jeho systém antén.

DARPA hovorí aj o vynesení špeciálnej servisnej družice na obežnú dráhu vesmírneho cintorína, ktorá by bola vybavená mechanickými ramenami a kamerovými systémami. Tieto by umožnili na diaľku napríklad rozoberať staré satelity.
