TV show M*A*S*H 4077th is one of the most famous TV shows ever and even tought it's of the air for indrecidble 37 years! The series has still fans around the world and is finding its way with younger generation as well. M*A*S*H is literally passing from one generation to another generation and claims that it has affected lives of milions around the world are not accidental. Few don't know literally legenderary characters like Hawkeye Pierce, Radar, Max Klinger, Margaret Houlihan, Frank Burns, BJ, Trapper, Charles Emerson Winchester, Henry Blake or Col.Potter. But M*A*S*H ​​is not only about these characters but also about supporting characters like Igor, Kellye, Rizzo, Mulcahy and others.

Last episode - Goodbye Farewall and Amen holds the record for the most-watched single-network television broadcasts in US - 105.9 milion people, worldwide it was 121.3 milion people. It was overtaken only by the Super Bowl. By comparison, the last part of Game of Thrones attracted 19.3 million people to TV and the last part of Big Bang Theory attracted 18 million people.
 

There is one great podcast in the podcast world that is dedicated to this series - MASH Matters, in which you can hear Jeff Maxwell, who played private Igor and Ryan Patrick - a lifelong fan of this series. The podcast is primarily about the MASH series itself, with great details from Jeff and Ryan. The podcast, which has been running for the second year, has also hosted several actors: Jamie Farr, Loretta Swit, Gary Burghoff, Kellye Nakahara, Mike Farell, Alan Alda and other such as: Dan Wilcox, John Rappaport and Burt Metcalfe.

A few weeks ago, I had the chance and the opportunity to talk with Jeff and Ryan. Not only about the podcast but also about the series itself. More than 15 pages of text fell out of almost two-hour interview, so I will divide this interview into 3 parts. I have to say that just as the podcast itself is fun, so is Jeff and Ryan. For me as a MASH fan, it's a dream come true to talk to someone who has spent so many years filming MASH and to be able to share my passion for the show with someone as Ryan.

Jeff Maxwell

Jeff’s show business career began in high school when he and a pal formed a comedy team, Garrett & Maxwell. Their comedic skills developed rapidly, and the boys went on to perform with such classic entertainers as The Smothers Brothers, Redd Foxx, Flip Wilson, Kenny Loggins and Robin Williams. After a very successful seven years of performing around the world, the two went their separate ways, and Jeff became a studio executive in the casting department of 20th Century Fox. Missing an audience, however, Jeff traded his executive suits for a green uniform in what was destined to become the most watched show in television history. For nine years, Jeff played the role of Private Igor the beleaguered mess tent cook on the iconic series, M*A*S*H

Acting in many other television shows and films, including a comedy-classic, The Kentucky Fried Movie, Jeff also wrote, produced and directed numerous corporate videos, including two award-winning drug-awareness programs for the Keebler Corporation: I Believe In Me and Sisters. He created and produced two pilots for the CBS television network and is the recipient of a TV Land Award for his work on M*A*S*H.

Some years after the series ended production, Jeff returned to his M*A*S*H roots by authoring a best-selling cookbook, Secrets of the M*A*S*H Mess: The Lost Recipes of Private Igor. Filled with delicious recipes, letters to Igor’s mom, and never-before-seen photos, the book was written to tell Jeff and Igor’s side of their M*A*S*H experience – and to make the case that Private Igor was secretly a good cook.

Forever the entrepreneur, Jeff and a music executive friend, Rick Shoemaker, created Breaking In, a radio show designed to help listeners navigate the complex world of breaking into the entertainment business. Breaking In was a five-year hit on Los Angeles radio.

His production entity is also deeply involved in creating and selling motion picture and television products, including a very intriguing documentary about golf.

A golfer, avid skier, and currently a Los Angeles resident, Jeff’s goal is to eventually move to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and ski until he drops over in the snow.

Ryan Patrick

Ryan Patrick spent most of his childhood recording silly voices and mindless musings into his handy-dandy tape recorder. Some things, it seems, never change.

Ryan is a writer, speaker, husband, father, former amateur magician, and a lover of cheese. Not fancy cheese. Just your run-of-the-mill cheddar. Sharp, preferably.

A veteran of the community theatre stage, Ryan has appeared in nearly 100 plays and musicals. Favorite roles/shows include: Willy Loman in Death Of A Salesman, Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird, Lloyd in Noises Off!, Tevye in Fiddler On The Roof, Oscar Madison in The Odd Couple, Vice-Principal Panch in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and various quirky characters in Greater Tuna and The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged).

In addition to his duties on M*A*S*H Matters, Ryan also hosts Funny Business: The 18-Minute Podcast About Marketing, Management, and Meatloaf with his best friend and business partner, Tim Miles.

When Ryan isn’t watching M*A*S*H, he’s enjoying live theatre, collecting autographs, cheering for his beloved St. Louis Cardinals, and passive-aggressively critiquing other people’s commercials.

Ryan resides in southern Illinois with his wife, two kids, and a dog named W*A*L*T*E*R.

 

Second part - best job and the podcast

Lukas: I really like what you mentioned there. You many time say your opinion as it was back then and how did you felt, not necessarily praise everything around MASH and lot of people who listen to the podcast appreciated your view which is totally different from fan view.

Jeff continues: And it is not that a MASH as a job was probably best job I have ever had. I’m really grateful for opportunity it gave me, and it was best job I ever had in showbiz. In terms of being on the set, not everything was perfect, but it was best of the best that I’ve could get. I was on another shows and I did other comedy shows and was involved in rehearsal process, production process, acting process and MASH was the best I’ve ever seen. The best people, the best attitude, the best everything so I’ve got lucky.

Question Lukas: Getting back to the podcast, why new people should listen to your podcast, what they can get?

Ryan: If honestly…

Jeff: We pay better than other podcasts…

All: laughs

Jeff: Ryan, we much better pay, we are not cheap.

Ryan: I mean honestly, somebody who can listen to our podcast there is several different reasons and I’m very kind of touch on it: somebody who is brand new to the show, who’s never watched it before and they just want to get insights behind the show. Someone who has watched the show when they were younger but haven’t watched it in while. This is great way to get reacclimate with the show. And there are also people who are die hard fans – the one who has been watching it since the original airing, or been watching reruns for many many years who has seen every episode inside and out and they are just looking for some new information. News stories, they wanna hear these interviews with these people who are like family to them. 

Jeff: nods

Ryan continues: There is also aspect, its been interesting because my wife who I would not say is huge mash fan, who watched it you know because, you heard about second hand smokers, so she is second hand watcher.

All: laughs

Ryan continues: Because I had it always on, but she listens to the podcast because I made her, I forced her listen to it.

All: laughs

Ryan continues: But she really enjoys listening to it, just because of the humor we like to keep in, the interviews…and also its nice little peak behind the curtain of Hollywood too. You know acting, directing and producing…So if anybody is interested in what makes a TV series work, what are the interworking of TV show, how you can get show on the air, what it takes to be actor – these are all nuggets we sprinkle in among the stories talking about specific episodes and actors. So anybody who is interested in TV, entertainment and of course if you are already MASH fan that’s just added benefit.

Lukas: Jeff do you want to add something or Ryan again copied your lines?

Jeff: laughs…It is true what Ryan said. The guest what we have on, cast members, writers and other people we have on as guest if you listen they might not necessary give you ABC but as you listen over the time, you know you accumulated real good bits and pieces of information not only about MASH but about showbiznis and how all that stuff works. It’s a lot of fun to be able to bring that to the people.

Best Interview

Question Lukas: You just touched one topic there, that you interview couple of people from the MASH: Jamie, Alan Alda will be on next podcast (46), Lorreta, Mike…For both of you which one was nicest interview?

Ryan: I let you go first Jeff

Jeff: laughs, thanks a lot

Ryan: I’ve got mine, but I want hear your first

Jeff: This won’t be heard by anyone right Lukas, no one will hear it

Lukas: No no don’t worry. Ryan: laughs in background

Jeff: Ok that is good thank you 

All: laughs

Jeff: Well, eh ok… I will do this diplomatically as I can – all of the people that we’ve interviewed who were cast members are really special and very important to me, all of them are people that I knew for 9-10 years and still do, so that kind of bond and friendship is pretty amazing and I’m grateful to I have it. Everyone has their own personality and I enjoy each one of them for who they are and for how they act in the world. I love them dearly every single one of them.
It would be hard to say there is a favorite, I do not have necessary favorite person there but…You know unmistakable that Alan Alda would sort of be somebody who would you really have a special feeling for,  simply because he is a special guy and he has real tremendous talent that is engaging and translates on so many different levels to so many different people that is really amazing. I’ve got to know him over the 9 years I was there, I got to know his family, so having him on the show on the podcast is very special for me, and I noticed for Ryan, having him on podcast kind of marks the milestone that is for us: its 2nd year anniversary so that was a special thing. But having the guy who was kind of considered the engine behind the show, having him come on our podcast and talk personally and be open and talk truthfully about what he went through and what were his experience and so fort, that was a very special moment for me…

So I can’t say he is favorite guy but it was certainly a very very special moment that I will treasure and really appreciate him taking the time to come on podcast and talk to us. I hope he had a good time, we sure did, I sure did. So, I guess special moment, yeah that was special for me, favorites – I will not say favorite because I love them dearly.

Ryan: I echo what Jeff said in that. I mean every time we’ve got to talk to anybody, as a fan of the show – I never thought I would get opportunity to talk to anybody connected to the show and even before I work in radio, including Jeff, I never taught I would be able to talk to the Jeff. But through this podcast I’ve had the opportunity to talk to so many people who either were on the show or worked behind the scenes to make the show to make the show I love. So yeah, I don’t know that I can pick favorite now I will single out one that I think was very special even more so now…and that was when we had opportunity to speak to Kellye Nakahara (episode: #14)

She played such an important role on that show, through the entire run of the show and she was always a presence there and in a fact, I think outside of main cast she did most appearance on that series. She had gone through a lot of medical issues, she has gone through so much and at that time when we spoke to hear, she was cancer free and she made that announcement even on our podcast. So it was very special one because, Jeff and Kellye had a such close personal deep relationship and for me it was just wonderful listening to these 2 old friends.

Now looking back now, she passed away this year because that awful cancer came back, so it was already special before that, but after she passed we had so many people reach out to us, thanking us that we did that interview and saying thank you so much for doing that that Kellye interview. It was just a special time and now knowing she is no longer with us, we still have her because of that – because of the series, because of the MASH, because of your interview, we are still able to connect with her. She was just a wonderful bubbly vibrant personality and so…yes Alan Alda, I mean I never thought I’ve would have a chance to talk to Alan Alda, Gary Burghoff who rarely does interviews and I don’t know he even really done podcast outside of ours, being able to talk to all of these people are just tremendous. But Kellye for me it really ended up one of the last if not last interview and be able to do that and listened to her do it with someone like Jeff who she loved made it special…

Moment of silence…

Jeff: I agree, I started to cry, listing to you talk about it. It’s true Kellye and I loved each other dearly. I knew he since I started on the show to the moment when she passed away. Our friendship was truly a special thing. Had I not showed up on MASH I would never meet her, so I’m very grateful for that. She was an amazing person, tremendously talented woman, great artist, she was loved on the set by everybody, contributed so much to the show. Kind of don’t noticed it right away. But when you start to watch it you really do see how much she is in the show and contributed to it as personality. That’s true it was a very special show to have her on our podcast, it was very special moment. I like her better than Alan, ok ok fine

2nd anniversary

Question Lukas: You just mention there that this will be your second anniversary, when you look back, what podcast gave you?

Ryan: It gives me opportunity to share my love for the show with other people like me. I felt like at the time we started, MASH wasn’t as well represented on podcasting as it could be, but since then it change, I feel. There are podcast out there for many many TV series and many of the goes episode by episode which is great concept and there is podcast which did this for MASH. I was wanting more, I was wanting to hear more about the series, not just each episode, but more about kind of oral history of the show. My initial idea was to try out to make a podcast that I would want to listen to about MASH. I will never say that I’m expert, I do not have encyclopedic knowledge of the series. I watched the series many many years and many many times over and know lot of about it, but I don’t know everything. And I also wanted to learn more about my favorite show. Not only I could share my love and passion for the show, but I wanted to learn more about, to find out more about it. By having Jeff be a part of it, I never in million years dreamed Jeff would wanna to be part of this, when he made the offer to this with me – after you picked me up the floor.

All: laughs

Ryan continues: this was dream come true, because now all of the sudden this little idea is now something even bigger and its gonna have more appeal too, because people are gonna come because of Jeff association with the show. And because of that also, to have opportunity to talk to these people who played pivotal role in my life, and not just the actors, but to be able to talk to writers and talk to writer like Dan Wilcox. Dan along with Thad Mumford, his writing partner, wrote one of my all time favorite episodes and just having the opportunity to talk to him about and be able to tell him this particular episode meant so much to me. Things like these, I just never in million years thought I would be able to do, so its very special to me for that reason.

Jeff: I sort of feel the same way, I’ve been very moved by the responses that we get from people saying thing like: you made me laugh Jeff when you whenever came on the screen, you were not on the screen for very long but I knew you will make me laugh. For me and that goes back to the fat kid in school, who was trying to make people laugh so they will not beat him up. When I hear that, it’s real emotional joy to me, so those moments I hear from people that say those thing, and they can say them as often as they like, its ok with me…

All: laughs

Jeff continues: Hearing that has been a real reward to me doing this. Also it's fun, I really enjoy having fun and really enjoy doing things with people who I really like. Ryan and I have established way of doing this, that I think it's not only fun, but I think we like each other to some degree and that is a real fun for me as well.

Ryan: nods

Jeff continues: If I would doing this with somebody else, I may or may not have done it for 2 years or had as much fun, but I think it works and so having experience to be able to share this with Ryan, I know what it feel like to get behind the scene of something that you really thing is special, I’ve done it myself in different ways, so I'm very happy to be able to bring this to him as well as to all people who want to hear behind the scenes of MASH too. All those things are some kind of in the bag that really helped me enjoy it. I will keep doing it at least for another week.

Lukas: I hope you will keep doing this for more than a week.

Jeff: Well I will talk with my agent then.

Favorite episode

Lukas: Ryan you just mention your favorite episode, can you tell us which exactly is it?

Ryan: An episode that is very special to me, but I’m not gonna make a commitment that this Is my all time favorite episode yet, that’s something we doing as we as go through the podcast – we highlighting season and we pick our top 3 from each season. But if this one isn’t my favorite it’s gonna be at least in top 3. It’s an episode War for all seasons – episode than spans entire year of all in MASH 4077th. That is the episode where Jeff/Igor famously creamed fathers Mulcehy corn. Episode where Winchester and klinger make baseball bet, that backfired to Winchester horribly. It’s just beautifully crafted episode and it’s perfect episode to show somebody who has never ever watched the show and just say here it is, here is great glimpse into what the show was – hard, humor. That was the one I was able to tell Dan Wilcox how special that was to me.

Ryan: I will say picking one episode from you now over from 200 episodes it’s not easy.

Lukas: Yeah I know, I wanted to pick one and ended up with 11 episodes so yeah.

Ryan: nods

Lukas: Jeff do you have some, I know you mentioned on podcast that you didn’t watched whole episode as it was shoot for TV, you saw some scene where you were on and actually you lived it on the set. But do you have favorite maybe episode, maybe scene that you would pick?

Jeff: Yeah there is show called Adam's Ribs and that was show where we standing in the chall line and Alan Alda come through and I say: Entre of the day is liver of fish and he starts his whole tirade about eaten of river of liver and ocean of fish and so fort and so on and then he just go crazy and start throwing stuff and dancing around and jump up on table. The scene was so fun to do, not only to watch Alan to do it, do this scene itself I tought it was funny and I enjoy doing it with him. But my partner standing next to me – Roy Goldman, he had such a fun look on his face and shooting close up of us. We started banging the pots up and down – no one told us to do that, we just did it. We thought it was funny, they laughed so yeah do it again keep doing it. That’s the moment, that is magic that happens and that magic happened for me on the set that day and  its just a real joy relive and watch. So when Adam's Ribs is on I watch it.

All: laughs

Lukas: Was Alan dance scripted?

Jeff: I asked him once, how did you come up with that? He said: I don’t know it’s just happened

Jeff continues: So I really don’t know, that what he said. I know him to be extremely improvisational guy and he has the talent to be that improvisational so wouldn’t be surprised if it’s just happened. I don’t think that was necessarily a plan. I think he kept going and it took him where he went. He was phenomenal. And watching his legs…Watching him dance and his legs where going in different direction – how do you even do that? 

Ryan/Jeff: laughs

Jeff continues: But I kind of think he improvised I don’t he planned it.
